#1. Speakers of the Wood Stoney
language indicate that it is much closer to the Assiniboine language
than is Mountain Stoney.
#2. It is thought that the
Wood Stoney migrated into their territory via a "northern"
route, whereas, the Mountain Stony are thought to have migrated
into their territory via a "southern" route.
#3. It should be noted that
"Stoney" is the Cree word for the Assiniboine and they
used it because they observed the Assiniboine cooking with the
use of stones. This suggests that the Mountain Stoney origin
is within range of the Cree. Thence Saskatchewan, not Montana
#4. With the depletion of
the buffalo in the late 1870's, the Mountain Stoney are thought
to have moved from the praires permanently into the mountains
to subsist on big game.
