Weapemeoc Division villages
(along the Albemarie Sound): Mascoming, Weapemeoc, Chepanoc,
and Pasquenoke. Chesapeake Division villages (at the mouth of
Chesapeake Bay): Apasus, Skicoak, and Chesepioc. The Chesapeake
Division was wiped out by the Powhatan Confederacy in 1607.
Incidently, the Moratoc/Mongoack
and Neusiok/Neuse on the maps were probably Tuscaroran Iroquois.
Evidently, there is no linguistic proof they were Algonquian.... |
